The Salten Sea
This region is notable for three reasons: First, its massive, salty lake is unlike anything else within the Wall. It is large enough that it requires sailing ships to cross, although it can be crossed fairly quickly, with favorable winds, a good ship, and a great navigator.
Second, there are a large number of isolated island communities throughout the Salten Sea. These islands are popular with people trying to escape their old lives.
Third, the southwest edge of the sea is flat against The Wall. Sailors say that travelling along this edge of the Sea is very unsettling, not to mention dangerous.
While the sea is not very large, the strange currents (both wind and water) make navigating it treacherous. Journeys tend to take much longer than one would expect, given the distance.
Salt marshes serve as a border between the Salten Sea and the swamps that lay to the northeast of it.
The Coast
The Salten Sea is divided from the main land by barrier islands (such as St. Simone’s Island and Updetrel) and salty marshes.
St. Simone’s Island
St. Simone’s Island is a popular tourist spot on the edge of the Salten Sea due to its pleasant climate and quaint (but intriguing) history. It is connected to the mainland by a single boardwalk bridge stretching through the marshes to the island.
Important destinations on the island include St. Simone’s Church (currently a museum), the Salten Sea Bee Company and Inn, Salty Sim’s Locksmithing and Novelties, the lighthouse (a popular wedding destination), and a post office. Mayor Winnie Chambers is the town’s most strident and beloved spokesperson.
Archipelagos, Atolls, and Other Islands
Although many islands in the Salten Sea were populated Pre-Loss, the treacherous waters cut them off from the rest of the world for several decades. Even as navigation improved, only the bravest sailors made their way from the islands to the coast (or vice versa), earning the people of the Salten Sea their moniker: “The Bold Folk.”
Ossaway Island
Once an important source of indigo and other rare crops, Ossaway has been all but forgotten due to the difficult currents of the Salten Sea.
Isle Conduit
The Salten Sea’s strange currents make it difficult for travelers to approach this island. It is positioned relatively close to The Wall and has an odd natural aura that seems to neutralize most arcane forces.
